Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Start a Website Scan

Begin by scanning your website to understand your current tracking setup:

  1. Visit TagAssistant.ai/scan
  2. Enter your domain (e.g., yoursite.com)
  3. Click "Start Scan"
  4. Wait 10-30 seconds for Tessa to analyze your site

What Happens During a Scan?

Tessa opens your website, inspects the HTML, detects all tracking scripts, analyzes your site structure, and identifies your website type (e-commerce, blog, etc.). This process is completely safe and read-only.
2

Review Your Scan Results

After the scan completes, you'll see several cards in your timeline showing:

📊 Scan Results Summary

Overview of detected tracking scripts, including Google Analytics IDs, GTM container IDs, Facebook Pixel, and other third-party tags.

🏷️ Website Type Selection

Tessa detects your website type automatically. You can confirm or change it to get more accurate recommendations.

📈 Template Analysis

Based on your website type, Tessa recommends the optimal tracking setup with specific events and configurations.

3

Understand Your Current Setup

The scan results will tell you exactly what's already installed on your site:

Common Scenarios:

  • No tracking detected: Perfect! You're starting fresh and Tessa can help you set up everything from scratch.
  • Google Analytics only: You have basic tracking but could benefit from GTM for better management.
  • GTM + GA4: Great foundation! Tessa can help optimize your configuration and add missing events.
  • Multiple conflicting scripts: Tessa will identify conflicts and help you clean up duplicates.
4

Select or Confirm Website Type

Tessa automatically detects your website type, but you can adjust it for better recommendations:

🛒 E-commerce

Product pages, shopping cart, checkout - track purchases and revenue

📝 Blog / Content

Articles, posts, reading time - track engagement and content performance

🏢 Corporate

Company site, services - track lead generation and contact forms

📱 SaaS / App

Software product, signups - track user activation and feature usage

Why Website Type Matters

Your website type determines which tracking events Tessa recommends. For example, e-commerce sites get purchase tracking, while blogs get scroll depth and reading time events.
5

Review Tessa's Recommendations

Based on your scan and website type, Tessa provides a detailed analysis showing:

  • Recommended Events: Which tracking events you should implement
  • Missing Setup: Gaps in your current tracking configuration
  • Best Practices: Industry-standard recommendations for your site type
  • Priority Actions: What to implement first for maximum impact

Example for E-commerce: Tessa might recommend implementing view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, and purchase events to track your sales funnel effectively.

Common Questions

Do I need to sign up to scan my website?

No! Your first scan is completely free and doesn't require any account. You'll get full results showing your current tracking setup and recommendations. Creating an account is only needed if you want to save scan history or connect Google Analytics for enhanced features.

Will scanning affect my website's performance?

Not at all. Tessa scans your website the same way a normal visitor would browse it - by loading pages and reading the HTML. This is completely safe and won't impact your site's performance, analytics data, or user experience.

What if Tessa gets my website type wrong?

You can easily change it! In the Website Type Selection card, you can choose a different type from the dropdown. Tessa will immediately update the recommendations to match your selection. The AI detection is usually accurate, but you know your business best.

Can I scan a website I don't own?

You can scan any public website to learn about its tracking setup - this is great for competitive research or inspiration. However, deployment features (like connecting Google Analytics or GTM) require ownership verification through OAuth, so you'll need admin access to actually modify tracking configurations.

How often should I scan my website?

We recommend scanning after major website updates, adding new features, or changing your tracking setup. Many users scan monthly or quarterly to ensure their analytics are working correctly. TagAssistant saves your scan history so you can track changes over time.
